Flower orientation influences floral temperature, pollinator visits and plant fitness

Effective insect pollination requires appropriate responses to internal and external environmental cues in both the plant pollinator. Helianthus annuus, a highly outcrossing species, is marked for its uniform eastward orientation of mature pseudanthia, or capitula. Here we investigate how this affects floral microclimate consequent effects on pollinator interactions reproductive fitness. We artificially manipulated sunflower capitulum temperature field controlled conditions assessed flower physiology, visits, seed traits siring success. East-facing capitula were found have earlier style elongation, pollen presentation visits compared with face west. also sired more offspring than west-facing under some produced heavier better-filled seeds.
